Valentine's Day bites the big one unless you're in a relationship. With chocolate.
Lucky for me, dark chocolate and I have basically been Facebook official for like 24 years now. I mean there aren't many dessert questions to which chocolate is not the answer.
Chocolate is always the answer. (Especially when it's salted almond dark chocolate, AKA the best kind.)
I can't find my socks. Have some chocolate!
I don't feel like doing my laundry. Have some chocolate!
I have nothing to wear out tonight. Have some chocolate!
I have an ear ache. Have some chocolate!
It's most definitely NOT a requirement to have a boyfriend in order to indulge in very large amounts of chocolate on V-Day. "V" stands for very large amounts of chocolate, dontchaknow?
So this year, I'm celebrating the single life with a super chocolatey and utterly delish smoothie loaded with vitamin C-packed strawberries. Did you know that one cup of strawberries boasts 160% of the daily value of immune-boosting vitamin C for only eight little grams of sugar?
Hubba hubba.
Eat this for breakfast, eat it for a snack, eat it with very large amounts of chocolate on top. I always add some kind of healthy fat (chia seeds, hemp seeds, almond butter, avocado, etc.) to my smoothies not only for that critical creamy texture, but also to sneak in some anti-inflammatory goodness early in the day. You could also easily make this more of a smoothie bowl or pudding by reducing the almond milk.
If you happen to know any hunky-nice-fun-smart-honest-funny-foodie men, feel free to send them my way. I'll totally make them a strawberry chocolate chia smoothie.
Strawberry Chocolate Chia Smoothie
- Prep Time: 5 mins
- Total Time: 5 mins
- Yield: 1 1x
Ingredients
- 1 cup frozen strawberries
- 1 ½ tbsp cacao powder
- 1 ½ tbsp chia seeds
- 3 large Medjool dates, pitted
- 1 ¼ cups unsweetened vanilla almond milk
Instructions
- If your dates aren't soft, soak them in hot water for 5 minutes prior to blending. Place all ingredients in a blender (I used my nutribullet) and blend until smooth. Sweeten to taste with pure maple syrup, more dates, or stevia if desired.

So today I made mine & my hub's morning smoothie with beet (not much coz he's not a fan), frozen strawberries, cacao powder, unsweetened yogurt, fresh OJ & cucumber. Yup and a little chia. Sounds strange when I write it but was gorgeously pink, very refreshing, and I reckoned in was an early V-day gift. After you're married with 3 kids you struggle sometimes with V-day… so we were feelin' the love with the extra-pink smoothie this morning, haha. Gonna try yours too Alexis, sounds fab. Always love the chocolate… 🙂
Alexis says
Mmmm the cucumber sounds so refreshing! I love the extra splash of pink for V-day 🙂

Definitely!

This sounds yummy, and the perfect way to start any day. Could you use cocoa powder if you don't have the cacao?

Are you in my head or what? I have the "i can't find my socks et al." monologue on a daily basis. Chia in smoothies is always a good idea -- they are so much creamier and thicker!
And married folks don't know what to do with Valentines day either. "Er...is it Valentines Day?" "I think so. Want burritos for dinner, babe?"
So romantic.
