When I was eight months pregnant, we decided to renovate our master bathroom. Fun, right?!
It's attached to the area right off of our bedroom that used to be my office and is now Max's nursery. Tackling this while I was in the hospital was no easy feat, but we couldn't be more happy with the new space. It was in desperate need of a makeover!
Speaking of home renovations, be sure to check out our Kitchen Renovation, too! I worked with our contractor friend Ryan on that project back in 2017. When I heard he teamed up with grade-school friend Joby of Hempy Construction to do more comprehensive renovations, I was super pumped. It's so hard to find good contractors!
Ryan is amazing with woodwork and does everything with such precision. He built us a custom herringbone barn door to separate the nursery from our bedroom that is jaw-dropping.
It was a pleasure working with Joby as the project manager, especially since we didn't need an architect or designer but did need someone who could understand our vision, draw everything out and lead the project. Hempy is very fairly priced and trustworthy, too.
Before Photos
Previously there was no door to the bathroom and the wall was positioned in a way that made the bathroom a lot smaller. There was only one tiny vanity and then an awkward double vanity around the corner in the office space, which was all carpeted. It was a wacky, super non-functional layout and we never used the double vanity.
We turned the double vanity area into a closet for the nursery, which provided some much needed storage space. We also added a door to the bathroom, knocked down the awkward wall and got rid of some windows so we could fit a 60 inch double vanity.
The vibe we were going for was bright, minimal, airy, and modern with light wood tones, white, gray, and matte black fixtures.
Vanity
This gorgeous handmade vanity from Columbus company Edgework Creative absolutely makes the space. It's such a statement piece! Edgework creates beautiful custom woodwork, metalwork, and fixtures, and they also have a collection of semi-custom furniture.
Their furniture is created and built by real people and made for real life--that's why they call it feel good furniture. We're talkin' heirloom quality furniture and fixtures meant to last for generations.
Even if you don't have a specific vision, Edgework is excellent at helping you navigate the process to create a handcrafted piece you love. They make tables, chairs, desks, mirrors, shelves, benches, vanities and beyond. Their work spans both residential and commercial projects and they ship nationwide!
Lindsay, Alex and their crew were a pleasure to work with. I love how much storage space we have in the slow close drawers. The bottom piece is great for storing extra towels. The whole process was pretty seamless.
I got the quartz top for the vanity from Keystone Granite. I went looking for a remnant piece that would be more affordable and just happened to find this gorgeous slab that was just big enough!
We decided on simple white vessel sinks paired with these black faucets.
I went with these fixtures for the lighting and love how it brought everything together. For a touch of gold, I chose these mirrors.
Edgework also made us gorgeous floating shelves with the same Ash wood we used for the vanity. They really tie everything together. It's a nice little nook perfect for our hampers.
Shower
There are few things I look forward to more as a new mom than a hot shower! I'm so obsessed with how the shower turned out. It was quite an adventure once our contractors realized how horrible the sub-flooring was, but they made it work!
Ohhhh, the fun surprises of renovating an old house.
I went with this hexagon pattern black tile with black grout for the shower floor. I love how it looks but would consider white grout next time since the dark grout can take on a lighter look from soap.
The shower walls are this oyster ceramic tile, which has a really pretty sheen to it. It's a step up for your everyday subway tile but still has that clean and simple look. We ditched the old brass faucet and upgraded to this matte black Delta one.
We originally purchased a shower door that opened outward versus sliding but realized we didn't have enough space for it. We ended up going with a frameless shower door that worked perfectly.
Accessories + More
For the flooring, we were planning on doing a cement looking tile but we had issues getting the product in on time. We decided to do this dark gray "drift" luxury vinyl tile (LVT) from Karndean per the recommendation of our contractor.
I was very skeptical about at first, but I'm so glad we went this route and I'm thrilled with how it looks. We put the pieces flush against each other so it looks like there's no grout.
Isn't this southwest bath mat the perfect touch?
One of my favorite parts of the bathroom is actually this Bluetooth Stereo Speaker Bathroom Exhaust Fan with LED Light. I love listening to music while I shower, so why not have a fan/light that doubles as a speaker?!
We chose Sherwin William's pure white for paint. Going with taller trim helped add to the modern feel.
If you use foaming hand soap like us (we're big Glenn Avenue fans), these foaming soap dispensers are awesome.
Square black door knobs and modern toilet paper holder and towel racks are a must! We snagged some extra towel hooks for next to the shower.
WHEW! That's a wrap. Leave any questions in the comments section!
A huge thanks to my friends at Edgework for gifting us the vanity. I was not compensated for this post and all opinions are my own.
