Who nominated me?
I was nominated last week by the lovely Hannah of Clean Eating Veggie Girl. A fellow herbivore, Hannah is one of those girls that I feel like I’ve known forever. We both have a serious love affair for plants, popcorn, and green smoothies. She basically rocks!
What am I working on?
Soooo the real question is what am I NOT working on. My blog life has taken a little bit of a hit ever since Alchemy opened. Because I work like a maniac during the week, it has been a huge struggle to squeeze in blog time. Not having the energy or time to write is one thing, but not being at my apartment to take pictures during the peek hours of daylight is another!
I’ve been doing my best to create recipes whenever I have free time on the weekends so I can still post at least one recipe per week. Besides trying to think of crazy exciting new healthy recipes for you guys, I’m also working on building up my nutrition counseling business at Alchemy. I know you guys appreciate nutrition posts as well, so I’m trying to think up some unique content along those lines.
Tell me, what would you like to see more of? I’m all ears, friends!
How does my work differ from others of its genre?
There are a number of healthy food blogs out there, but writing from the viewpoint of a foodie and a registered dietitian that runs a healthy cafe is a whole other ball game. Over the years, I’ve really come to understand food in so many different ways, from where it’s sourced, how it’s grown, and how it’s processed before it makes its way into our bellies. Having a true understanding of food allows me to teach others how to appreciate quality, wholesome food.
While I love me some nutrient-dense recipes, I’m not one of those bloggers that posts recipes with ingredients you’ve never heard of. I try to stay away from intimidating recipes that take all day to prepare because there’s nothing worse than reading about an “easy” recipe and finishing it three hours later. I do my best to ensure that my food looks good, tastes good, and is good for you. That’s a helluva combination!
And at the end of the day, I try to keep it lighthearted around here. Now and then I’ll go on a rant about trans fat, but I keep it mostly light and funny. Life is so much better when there’s laughter!
I pride myself on being relatable, on being real. One second I’m instagramming a kale salad and one second it’s two scoops of Jeni’s sweet potato ice cream with torched marshmallows in a waffle cone. I mean what’s kale without ice cream?
Why do I write/create what I do?
I started this blog in 2011 because I loved to write and I loved to eat. I grew up surrounded by a family of inspirational writers. My grandpa wrote several books on writing that sold over 1.5 million copies. He even taught writing classes for the CIA. My dad edited every school paper I ever wrote and still emails me typos from the blog to this day. My mom had me saying “my friend AND I” by the time I was nine.
Writing is my release, and to be able to personify my passion on this space is truly the best thing that ever happened to me. Hummusapien is everything I am and I couldn’t imagine my life without it. As long as you keep reading, I’ll keep writing!
How does my writing/creative process work?
If you know me at all, you know that I have really, really bad handwriting. You also know that I don’t plan my blog posts more than a week out. Most bloggers keep an organized calendar of all their blog content, but in the three and a half years I’ve been blogging, I’ve never been one of those people! I know every Wednesday I’ll share my eats for What I Ate Wednesday, and I try to post a recipe every Monday. Thursday is up in the air. Every week is a new surprise!
It’s hard to believe that I’ve stayed consistent with this serious lack of editorial organization, huh? I’m one of those type A people who has some shockingly type B personality traits, like losing my phone every ten minutes and leaving my purse at Chipotle and not planning my blog posts ahead of time. And laughing when people try to photograph me with my fave crackers.

The first blogger I’m nominating is my gal pal Julia from The Roasted Root. I’ve already wrote my butt off about how much I adore this lady’s wit, recipes, and huge heart. Everything she whips up is fab! She’s written a bajillion cookbooks, so I can only imagine how insane her day-to-day life is. She’s that cool blogger friend that you feel SUPER legit knowing.
My next nominee is Davida of The Healthy Maven, aka my bestie that I’ve never met. I make her recipes all the time. Literally. Last night I made her one pot beef and 3-bean chili for my carnivorous boyf. Obviously he adored it because everything she creates is sheer perfection. Love dat chick!
Lastly, I’m nominating Robyn from The Real Life RD. Robyn is a total sweetheart, fellow RD, and the master of What I Ate Wednesday! Seriously, her WIAW posts are insanely fabulous. She eats all the best food and pairs her pictures with educational nutrition content. Rockstar alert!!
