Today I just want to chat. I want to chat about a product or five that I have a crush on. Like seventh grade, heart-pounding, think you’re madly in love but may or may not know his name kind of crush.
Basically I just want to take a break from recipes and be real for a hot sec about some scrumptious products that taste mighty fine and do your body some good, too. Let the awards commence!
Vega Protein Powder
I’m gonna go ahead and say that Vega just does protein supplements better than most of the rest. Committed to organic, non-GMO ingredients, this protein is purely plant-based and loaded with all the good stuff, from healthy fats and fiber to antioxidants and vitamin B-12 (which is a super important nutrient, especially for vegans). Instead of the traditional processed soy protein powders, Vega One uses pea, hemp, and flaxseed protein in combinations proven to adequately repair muscle tissue.
In my opinion, Vega has the perfect amount of sweetness thanks to stevia. I add anywhere from half a scoop to a full scoop (depending on if it’s post-workout or not) and I find that I don’t have to add any additional sweeteners. You all know I’m also a huge fan of Vega Vanilla Protein + Greens. My go-to blend is this Blueberry Cacao Smoothie Bowl, but I also use this protein in my Lemon Coconut No-Bake Bites, Pumpkin Protein No-Bake Bites, No-Bake Cherry Vanilla Protein Bars, and so many more!
Ohhhhh how I adore maca. It’s one of the only supplements I use. While it’s a fairly new love affair, it’s a strong one. I started taking it last year when I went off birth control in an effort to balance my hormones. A Peruvian delicacy, maca (no no, not matcha) is a superfood root that has been growing in the Andes for over 3,000 years. In addition to functioning as a natural energy and libido booster, it’s is rich in vitamins A, C, and E, and also may have some pretty amazing effects on skin. Rumor has it, maca can even help alleviate cramps, body pains, and hot flashes. I’d like to reiterate that it does boost libido and also fertility, so ladies…be careful! I get mine at Whole Foods but you can also get it online. The capsule form is way more affordable that the powder.
Sunflower Seed Butter
As if we all weren’t a little too obsessed with peanut, almond, and cashew butter, here is another butter we can all begin to worship. Made with sunflower seeds (duh), this butter has many of the same health benefits as its nut buttah brothers. Sunflower seeds are chock full of protein, anti-inflammatory omega-3’s, and filling fiber. In my opinion, it has a totally addicting, nutty, sweet, unique flavor unlike any other nut or seed butter. Coming in creamy, crunchy, natural, organic, no stir, your possibilities are endless. I like it on rice cakes or apples, but feel free to add it to your smoothies, smooth it over all the toast, or role it into a no-bake bite. Always remember that spooning it straight from the jar is always a more than acceptable option.
You know when you hear that dark chocolate is good for you? It’s the cacao content that they’re referring to. Nibs are changing the chocolate game, and for good reason. What are they, exactly? Cacao nibs are simply the cacao beans themselves that have been roasted and taken out of their husks. These little flakes of fun are one of the greatest known sources of magnesium. They’re also crazy high in fiber, iron, and antioxidants. Oh and hey, they’re proven mood-boosters. I love sprinkling them on smoothies for crunch. Basically what I’m saying is to eat chocolate, ahem–cacao nibs, all day erryday for a healthier and happier you.
If snack bars were in a Facebook relationship, it would be “complicated.” KIND bars are… less complicated. In a world where traditional snack bars mean loads of added sugar and mystery ingredients, these bad boys break through the stereotypes. KIND snacks are made from whole fruit, nuts, and grains, so you can actually see what’s in them. The flavors are dreamy and I love that the low-sugar line of bars have less than six grams of sugar. When you don’t have the time to make your own, these are a really good option. My faves include cashew ginger spice and dark chocolate nuts & sea salt. The savory jalapeño bar with brown rice protein is also pretty damn scrumptious.
